LITTLE ROCK – The Trojans finished off a sweep of the visiting Bluejays with a 7-1 win behind junior Cameron Allen on the hill. Junior Mitchell Scheuler added a three-run home run to power the offense for UALR (3-0, 0-0 Sun Belt Conference) that outscored Creighton (0-3, 0-0 Big East) 19-6 in the three-game series at Gary Hogan Field.
Allen got his first start of the season and came through with a great performance, the Trojans’ third solid outing of the weekend from their starters. The right-hander went 7.0 innings allowing just three hits and one run while striking out a career high six batters. He finished his out by retiring 16 straight Bluejays before he turned it over to the bullpen.
For the third-straight game, the Trojans scored in the first inning and didn’t trail at all during the season-opening series. Senior Ben Crumpton led off the home half of the first inning with a walk before stealing second. Crumpton advanced to third on an infield hit by sophomore Ryan Scott and then scored on a throwing error on the play. Senior Austin Pfeiffer then reached on a bunt single. Junior Justin Steelmon stepped to the plate and singled to right field driving in Scott and giving the Trojans a 2-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third Pfeiffer sparked another big rally. The senior got the first of three straight infield singles from him, senior Bryson Thionnet and Steelmon. Then junior Tanner Rockwell popped into foul territory down the right field line and although Creighton’s second baseman was able to catch the ball, Pfeiffer was able to race home to give the Trojans a 3-1 lead. Then Scheuler stepped to the plate and gave UALR its big blow for the game. The right fielder launched a ball over the left-centerfield wall to stretch the lead out to 6-1.
The Trojans would add another run in the bottom of the seventh when Scott drove a ball over the right field fence to give UALR its 7-1 final score. Junior Josh Merrill and junior Dyllon Brownmiller came on in relief and each pitched an inning to hold the Bluejays to one run.
Allen and the pitching staff only had one jam, which came in the second inning. Brett Murray drove a ball deep to the right-centerfield wall to drive in a run, but the quick relay from Scheuler to Pfeiffer to junior Drew Merten at the plate cut down a runner at the plate.
Steelmon led the offense going 3-for-4 including a double and one run scored. Scheuler went 1-for-4 with three RBIs and a home run. Scott and Pfeiffer each had two hits Scott scored twice and Pfeiffer scored once. Crumpton added a hit, a stolen base and a run scored. Merten went 1-for-3 with a double. Sophomore Hayden Martin and Thionnet added a single each.
The Trojans will hit the road for the first time when they travel to Southeast Missouri State on Tuesday for a game starting at 3:00 p.m. in Cape Girardeau, Mo. UALR will be back at home next weekend when it plays host to Bradley for a weekend series starting Friday at 3:00 p.m. at Gary Hogan Field.
