ITTA BENA, Miss. UALR junior Robert Taylor went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI on Tuesday night to lead the Trojans (17-23) to an 11-10 win at Mississippi Valley State. UALR matched its season high with five errors, but banged out 18 hits to escape Delta Devils Field with a win.

UALR trailed 4-2 after three innings, but scored seven runs over the next two frames to take a 9-5 lead. Freshman Ashur Tolliver provided the spark in the top of the fourth, belting his first home run of the year (a two-run shot to right) to give UALR a 5-4 lead.

With the game tied at 5-all, the Trojans used a RBI single from senior Brett Lawler and a two-run base knock from freshman Brad Swiderski to go ahead 9-5. The Trojans scored a run in the sixth and seventh innings to go on top 11-5, but could have done more damage in the seventh if not for a triple play by the Delta Devils.

With two runners on base, junior Tommy Mousel hit a line drive to MVSU second baseman Kyle Latiolais, who managed to touch the bag to force out freshman Sean Joyce and tag junior Osvaldo Torres to complete the unassisted triple play.

Trailing 11-5, the Delta Devils rallied for five runs in the bottom of the seventh after a two-out error extended the inning. Junior Derik Drewett retired the first two batters of the frame, but an error at second led to five runs off four hits for MVSU, capped off by a two-run single from Ross Myers. Freshman Gavin Gray came on with the tying run on second and two outs, and managed to get a pop up from Joel Gafford to end the inning.

Gray and junior Joe Campbell went the final 2.1 innings to preserve the win for UALR, with Campbell earning his first career save by recording the final two outs of the game (both off strikeouts) with the tying run on first.

Taylor’s four hits included his seventh home run of the season, tying him for the team lead. Taylor, Lawler and Tolliver each drove in a team-high two runs in the win. Senior Brian Asbill added a 3-for-5 day at the plate with two runs scored.

UALR returns to action this weekend when it heads to Bowling Green, Ky. for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series with Western Kentucky. Game one is slated for 6 p.m. on Friday.
