MURFREESBORO, Tenn.—Middle Tennessee held the UALR women’s basketball team to just one field goal in the remaining 3:08 as the Blue Raiders defeated the Trojans 59-51 Sunday to remain undefeated in Sun Belt Conference action. The Trojans fall to 13-12 overall and 8-4 in SBC play.
With the win, Middle Tennessee (21-5, 13-0 SBC) continued the team’s winning streak at 15 games and improved the team’s home court conference record under head coach Rick Insell to 59-1.
Taylor Ford led the Trojans with 13 points including recording the Trojans only three-pointer of the game, while Britteni Williams knocked down 11 points. Taylor Gault added ten points in the loss.
Williams and Hannah Fohne led the Trojans in rebounds with eight.
A UALR steal led to the first field goal of the game from Gault. MT answered back with three-straight points, before a jumper by Janette Merriex at the 17:19 mark put UALR back up 4-3.
Back-to-back Blue Raiders baskets by Icely Elie and Ebony Rowe gave MT their greatest lead of 7-4 with 16:15 on the clock. Both teams traded baskets, before a jumper and free throw by Ford sparked a 5-0 run giving UALR the lead 13-11.
After MT tied the score, the Trojans regained a lead on free throws by Ford and a jumper by Kiera Clark. The Blue Raiders answered back with six-straight points including a three-point play by Kortni Jones at the 4:34 mark to regain a 19-17 advantage.
Both teams exchanged points with all of the Blue Raiders coming from the free throw line, before the Trojans knocked down two free throws by Britteni Williams and a jumper by Clark for the 25-22 lead.
Jones knocked down 3-of-4 from the line for MT to tie the half-time score at 25.
Middle Tennessee opened the second half scoring on free throws and a layup by Elie for a 28-25 lead. UALR scored the team’s first field goal of the half on a jumper by Fohne at the 18:01 mark.
Over the next two minutes, the Blue Raiders outscored the Trojans seven to three including a three-pointer by Jones for the 35-30 advantage. After free throws by Britteni Williams, a three-point play by Ford tied the score at 35 with 13:37 remaining.
After baskets on both ends, MT recorded six-straight points for the 42-37 edge. With 9:35 remaining, a three-point play by Britteni Williams cut the Blue Raider lead to two.
The Blue Raiders maintained the lead stretching it to 47-42 on a three-pointer by Laken Leonard at the 7:46 mark. Over the next four minutes, both teams recorded baskets with UALR outscoring MT five to four.
In the remaining 3:08, Middle Tennessee used an eight to five run holding the Trojans to just one field goal on a three-pointer by Ford with 14 seconds left to hold on for the 59-51 win and the team’s 15-straight win.
UALR women’s basketball continues action on Wednesday, February 15 as the Trojans host FIU for the Play for Kay Pink Zone game. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at The Jack Stephens Center.
