ROCK, Ark.—Elena
Delle Donne recorded 39 of Delaware’s 73 points as the Blue Hens delivered a
first round loss to the UALR women’s basketball team 73-42 Sunday at The Jack
Stephens Center. The Trojans end the season with a 20-13 overall record.
For the Trojans, senior Marian Kursh led the team in points
with 12, while sophomore Taylor Ford led
the team in rebounds with eight. The Trojans shot 30.8 percent from the field
for the game including a 29.6 mark in the second half going 8-of-27.
Delle Donne recorded 39 points, including
20 in the first half, and led the Blue Hens with 11 rebounds. Her 39 points set a new Jack Stephens Center record for scoring.
Delaware won the opening
tip, but the Trojans put the first points on the board with a layup from Kursh.
The Blue Hens answered back with a jumper from Delle Donne. Both teams
exchanged points, before UALR took a 6-4 lead at the 17:35 mark on a layup by
Kursh.
Four-straight points by Delle Donne for Delaware sparked a 13-0
run by the Blue Hens to take a 17-6 lead with 12:18 until the half. The Trojans
answered back with a three-pointer by Taylor
Gault followed by a layup and one by Britteni
Williams to cut the Delaware advantage to 17-12 and score the team’s first
field goal in over six minutes.
After a three by Delle Donne, the Trojans
missed two free throw opportunities as the Blue Hens scored five more points
for the 25-13 lead with 7:46 on the clock. Over the next minute, UALR out
scored UD six to two as the Trojans received points on a three-pointer by Janette Merriex and a three-point play
by Kursh.
In the remaining 5:02 of the half, Delaware scored six
points to UALR’s three as the Trojans missed three free throws and went into
the locker room down 32-22.
Delaware opened the second half with
seven-straight points including five-straight from Delle Donne to take the
39-22 advantage. UALR answered back with four-straight points from Gault and
Merriex.
Over the next six minutes, the Blue Hens
held UALR to just two points on a layup by Kursh while scoring 12 including six
from Delle Donne as Delaware
extended their lead to 51-28 with 11:16 remaining.
The Trojans scored the team’s first field
goal in seven minutes at the 11:02 mark on a jumper by Kursh.
Both teams scored points with Delaware holding the
edge. In the remaining 3:38, UALR received six points from Ka’Nesheia Cobbins as Delaware
advances to the second round with a 73-42 win.
