Trojans Move Up On Second Day Of SBC Golf Championships

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. - The UALR men's golf team carded a five-over par 293 in the second round of the 2012 Sun Belt Conference Golf Championships on Tuesday to move up to fourth place in the team standings. Freshman Colby Benton fired a one-under par 71 to lead the Trojans on day two, and is currently tied with teammate Alfred Kerstis for 12th place after 36 holes at the par-72, 7,371-yard Fighting Joe Course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at the Shoals.

The Trojans made a 15-stroke improvement on the second day, rebounding from a 20-over par 308 on Monday to shoot a five-over par 293 in the second round. Colby Benton led the way with his 71, followed by one-over par 73's from Kerstis and junior Nicklaus Benton, and a four-over par 76 from sophomore Luis Cedeno. Colby Benton (77-71) and Kerstis (75-73) are tied for 12th place at four-over par 148 after two rounds, with Nicklaus Benton (80-73) and Cedeno (77-76) sharing 23rd place at nine-over par 153.

North Texas fired a six-under par 282 on Tuesday and heads into Wednesday's final round with a seven-stroke lead over second-place Middle Tennessee. The Mean Green are at four-over par 580 through 36 holes (298-282), followed by the Blue Raiders at 11-over par 587 (298-289). UALR is in fourth place at 25-over par 601 (308-293), and trails third-place Louisiana-Lafayette by just two strokes (311-288 - 599).

UNT's Ty Spinella followed up an opening-round 71 with an even-par 72 in the second round, and leads the field with a one-under par 143 total (71-72). Denver's Chun Ji-Kim is just one shot back of Spinella at even-par 144, thanks to a three-under par 69 in the second round. MT's Brett Patterson (74-71) and Florida Atlantic's Pablo Gerboles-Parrilla (73-72) are tied for third place at one-over par 145.
