INDIANAPOLIS - UALR freshman Alfred Kerstis received an at-large invitation to the 2012 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship Regionals on Monday. The Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, Kerstis will be one of five individuals competing at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Okla. The 54-hole tournament will take place May 17-19, with the top five teams and the lowest scoring individual advancing to the finals May 29-June 3 at The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
"If you ever watched Alfred practice, you know why he is the freshman of the year in the Sun Belt Conference, and you know why he is the going to the regional," said UALR head coach Wyn Norwood. "He practices with a purpose at all times. He never goes out there and randomly hits balls or just goes through the motions. He has a purpose for everything he does on the golf course."
Kerstis is ranked sixth in the Sun Belt Conference with a 72.79 scoring average as a true freshman in 2011-12. A native of Gothenburg, Sweden, Kerstis recorded six top-10 finishes in UALR's 10 events this season, with nine sub-par rounds. He placed second at the University of Louisville's Cardinal Intercollegiate and Southeastern Louisiana's Carter Plantation Intercollegiate, and tied for ninth place at the Sun Belt Championships in his last outing.
In addition to Norman, Okla., other NCAA Regional sites include Greensboro, N.C., Athens, Ga., Bowling Green, Ky., Ann Arbor, Mich., and Stanford, Calif.
