- A 4-0 defeat at the hands of Troy (11-9) ended UALR's (13-13) 2011-12 season
in the first round of the Sun Belt Conference Tournament at the Waranch Tennis
Complex Thursday morning. Troy jumped out to a 1-0 lead by taking two of three
in doubles before winning the first three finished singles matches to seal the
Three UALR players were either winning or tied in their
singles matches when the match was called. Junior Veronique Luksich was tied 6-6 in the first set with All-Conference
performer Karoline Grymel in the No. 1 matchup, while sophomore Viktoriya Plyuta had won the opening
set (3-6, 5-3) in her match against Lyubov Dorofeeva in the No. 2 match.
Freshman Nina Yates (6-3, 0-5) was
closing in on a second-set win against Samya El Hsissen when the match called.
In the finished singles matches, Olfa Dhaoui topped
junior Yana Kakovkina 6-0, 6-1, and
Candela Munoz Giron defeated freshman Michaela
McShane 6-2, 6-1. Rosaura Ramirez-Vega picked up another straight-set win
for Troy, winning 6-0, 6-1 against freshman Alina Kolegova.
Prior to singles, Troy took two of three in doubles to
garner an early 1-0 lead. Kakovkina and Plyuta nearly pulled off the upset
against the All-Conference duo of Grymel and Dorofeeva, falling 8-6 in the No.
1 matchup. Luksich and McShane pulled
off UALR's only win of the day, as the duo pounded Ramirez-Vega and Gabrielle
Vega 8-1 to end the season on an eight-match win streak. Munoz Giron and Dhaoui
defeated Yates and Kolegova by an 8-3 count in the No. 3 match to secure the
doubles point for Troy.
The Trojans' 13 wins this season were the most by a
UALR squad since the 2006-07 team went 18-9 on the year. Without a senior on
its roster, UALR returns all seven of its letterwinners for the 2012-13 season.
