LITTLE ROCK - UALR seniors Adam Champion and Tyson Parks were each named to the All-Sun Belt Conference Second Team on Tuesday night, as announced by the league office at the annual awards ceremony.
"It's a nice honor for our school to have two guys make the all-conference team. Tyson worked real hard and made some great improvements his senior year," said UALR head coach Scott Norwood. "Adam chose to come back for his senior year after being drafted last summer, and really made some strides this season. We're looking forward to seeing where he ends up in this year's draft."
A 6-7 left-handed pitcher, Champion (7-4) ranks fourth in the Sun Belt Conference with a 3.11 earned run average. He made 14 starts as a senior, leading the Trojans in innings pitched (98.1) and strikeouts (74), while holding opposing hitters to a .253 batting average. Champion is tied for third in the SBC in innings pitched, and sits seventh in both strikeouts and opponent's batting average. His 3.11 ERA is good enough for 71st nationally (through games of May 23).
A 23rd Round pick of the San Francisco Giants in 2009, Champion totaled a season-high nine strikeouts on two occasions this season, the last of which came over 7.1 innings against Louisiana-Lafayette on April 16. He went the full 9.0 innings against South Alabama on March 12, limiting the Jaguars to six hits and three runs, while racking up seven strikeouts against one walk. Champion picked up his sixth win of the year by holding ULM to seven hits and one unearned run over 9.0 innings in a 3-1 win on May 14.
The Evansville, Ind.-native ends his four-year career ranked fifth all-time in UALR history with 208.1 innings pitched. He also ranks fourth all-time in career starts (35) and shares sixth place with 163 career strikeouts.
Parks was named Second Team All-Conference as a utility player after a 2010 season in which he split time between right field and first base. The Beatrice, Neb.-native batted .300 on the year and led the Trojans with 20 doubles and 40 walks. He ended the regular season tied for the Sun Belt lead in doubles while also tying for second place in walks, and was ranked in the top-80 nationally in both categories.
Parks started all 54 games for the Trojans in 2010, finishing with 45 runs scored, seven homers, 44 RBI and a .512 slugging percentage. He enjoyed a season-high 10-game hit streak from March 17-30, and committed just one error in 329 total chances for a team-best .997 fielding percentage.
A two-year letterman, Parks ends his UALR career tied for fourth place on the school's all-time list for career doubles with 33.
