LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – UALR Director of Athletics Chris Peterson announced Tuesday that Freddy Delgado has been named the school’s new head women’s soccer coach. Delgado comes to UALR after seven seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, and takes over a program which is coming off a school-record 10 wins in 2007.
“We are very excited to have Freddy become the newest member of the UALR family,” said Peterson. “He brings great familiarity with the Sun Belt Conference to this position and came very highly recommended. I look forward to his energy and passion taking our program to the next level. I think he will be a great asset to both the Arkansas soccer community and Little Rock.”
Delgado joined the ULM program in 2001 and was an integral part of the Warhawks’ success and growth over the last seven years. During his time at ULM, Delgado’s guidance helped produce 26 All-Conference selections, four Academic All-Americans and a school-record 14-6-2 season in 2004.
“I would like to thank Chris Peterson, Andrea Nunez and the selection committee for this great opportunity,” said Delgado. “I would also like to thank my former student-athletes, Bobby Staub, Stacy Lamb and the entire community at the University of Louisiana at Monroe for their help in preparing me for this next step. I believe in the direction of the UALR women’s soccer program and I am looking forward to working with an outstanding group of student-athletes.”
Working alongside ULM head coach Stacy Lamb, Delgado served as the team’s primary coach during team practices and conditioning, as well as the program’s recruiting coordinator. His disciplined approach to technique and emphasis on defense, helped ULM place seven defenders on All-Conference teams during his tenure.
A standout at Regis University from 1993-97, Delgado began his coaching career at his alma mater, where in four years as an assistant coach (1997-2001) he helped guide the women’s program to the 1999 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference regular-season championship and a conference tournament title in 2000. During his time at Regis, Delgado also served on staff of the Colorado Olympic Development Program from 1997-2001.
Delgado gained additional experience as the head coach of the Colorado Rush U-16 boys team from 1999-2001, and served as the club director of the NELSA Soccer Association from 2001-2008. In 2005, Delgado received his United States Soccer Federation “A” license, the highest certification offered for collegiate soccer coaches.
UALR returns 18 lettermen and its entire starting lineup in 2008. The 2007 Trojans established a new school record with 10 wins and advanced to the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Semifinals for the first time in the program’s history.
