The second annual "SpectacUALR" event presented by Windstream Communications will take place Thursday, Oct. 14 at the Jack Stephens Center and will honor longtime UALR team physician Dr. Jack Vander Schilden. A 2003 inductee into the UALR Athletic Hall of Fame, Dr. Vander Schilden begins his 26th year with the program in 2010-11 and has donated countless hours to the care of Trojan student-athletes.
Dr. Vander Schilden was inducted into the UALR Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003 for his outstanding contributions to Trojan athletics. He has been involved with UALR since joining the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 1985, and currently serves as the Jackson T. Stephens Distinguished Professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at UAMS.
"Dr. V's contributions to the University for the past 25 years have been immeasurable. His care and concern for the student-athlete is very special," said UALR Director of Athletics Chris Peterson. "UALR has been extremely fortunate to have Dr. V as a friend."
He graduated from DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., where he lettered in football, as an offensive lineman, and wrestling. He was awarded the Fred C. Tucker Memorial Award in 1973, an honor given annually to the outstanding student-athlete at the institution. He then attended Rush Medical College in Chicago, Ill., and earned his M.D. in 1977.
Dr. Vander Schilden was honored in 2007 by the Arkansas Athletic Trainers Association (AATA) at the group's annual meeting in Little Rock. The AATA presented Dr. Vander Schilden with a Lifetime Honorary Membership Award and renamed one of its scholarships the Dr. Jack Vander Schilden Graduate Student Scholarship. A member of the Trojan Athletic Foundation, he and his wife, Pam, reside in Little Rock and have two children.
Last year's inaugural event, chaired by Cortney Beebe and Jane Yocum, honored Mrs. Annette Fisher and raised over $180,000 in support of Trojan student-athletes. The Trojan Athletic Foundation will once again host the event this year, led by the efforts of co-chairs Jane Yocum and Andrea Peel.
The evening will feature unique silent and live auction items with all proceeds directly impacting UALR's current student-athletes. Cocktails and heavy hors d'oeuvres will be served, and the attire will be business casual. Tickets for the event are $50 and will go on sale later this summer.
